VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now)- A long weekend commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Siege of Vicksburg during the Civil War kicked off Thursday with the release two postage stamps. One depicting the Battle of Gettysburg and the other the Siege of Vicksburg.

The stamps were dedicated in ceremonies both in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and at the Vicksburg National Military Park Thursday morning. Our own resident historian and Civil War buff Walt Grayson emceed the event in Vicksburg.

The Vicksburg Warren School District sent Pre-K students at Sherman Avenue and Dana Road home with backpacks filled with reading material thanks to the district's federal programs.

The district hopes the backpacks will help the students to continue reading during the summer in preparation for Kindergarten.

Many gardeners try to give their landscape the feel of an informal cottage garden. This garden concept has a loose, flowing feel, kind of like you just let plants grow wherever they happen to pop up in the landscape.

I had a professor way back in college who had a unique cottage garden planting method: He would walk through the landscape and just toss plants over his shoulder. We planted them where they landed. And you know what? His gardens looked awfully good.

Sgt. Johnnie Edwards of the Vicksburg Police Department was named Top Cop at a ceremony Wednesday to honor the top officers from around state.

Edwards has been with the Vicksburg Police Department for 13 years.

Pepper spray hits bystanders in Vicksburg Junior High fight

The district says a male student initiated the fight that also involved two other students.

VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now)- A school resource officer broke up a fight at Vicksburg Junior High School with pepper spray Monday, but some students not involved in the fight got caught in the crossfire.

"Just said her eyes started burning. Her nose was dry. Her throat was burning and she just fell to the ground. She said that she had trouble getting to where she needed to be because her eyes were bothering her so bad," said Kathy Luna whose daughter was accidentally sprayed.

Vicksburg Chick-fil-A to open Thursday

VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Vicksburg's first Chick-fil-A restaurant is set to open its door Thursday.

The grand opening will include the restaurant's "First 100" event. The first 100 adults in line when the doors open at 6 a.m. Thursday will win a one-year supply of free Chick-fil-A meals.

The line officially opens at 6 a.m. Wednesday with the free meal cards being awarded 6 a.m.

MISSISSIPPI STATE – Planting the right trees in the best locations is a good investment that can also pay dividends in energy savings for home and business owners.

Bob Brzuszek, associate professor in Mississippi State University’s Department of Landscape Architecture, said planting trees that block the summer sun on the south and west sides of buildings and roofs can substantially reduce air-conditioning costs.
