Warren Co. Circuit Clerk owes taxpayers $649K | News
Vicksburg, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Thursday morning the Warren County Board of Supervisors demanded that Circuit Clerk Shelly Ashley-Palmertree repay more than $649,000 to the county. This includes $163,000 paid to her father, who works in the office, and interest. Officials say the money was collected over and above Ashley-Palmertree's capped salary level for six years.
Ashley-Palmertree apparently can't come up with that amount, according to her attorney. She tried to negotiate a $50,000 yearly payment over 10 years. Thursday morning, supervisors rejected her offer.
"The board voted to instruct our attorney and our county administration to collect those funds that she owes in entirety by whatever legal means they can find," said Warren County Board of Supervisors President Bill Lauderdale.
We went to Ashley-Palmertree's office in the courthouse. Workers told us she was in a meeting and unavailable.
In a Jan. 14 letter to the attorney for the Warren County Board of Supervisors, Ashley-Palmertree's attorney stated, "The total amount is extremely large. My client was never questioned about this at an earlier date, when it could have been more easily rectified. Six years should not have passed without action by some agency. Ms. Palmertree is adamant that she wants to pay back this amount ($402,000), if given the opportunity."
The State Auditor had no comment.
